BCBA recertification in 2026: how many CEUs you need and how to report them

The 30-second answer

To recertify, a BCBA needs 32 CEUs in each 2-year cycle, including 4 in ethics and, if they supervised during the cycle, 3 in supervision. A BCaBA needs 20, also with 4 in ethics and 3 in supervision when supervising. CEUs are entered in your BACB account with their documentation, and the BCBA application fee is $215. Starting in 2027, the BACB raises supervision CEUs to 4 for BCBAs who supervise, and it has not yet said how this applies to cycles already in progress.

Step 1 of 8

How many CEUs you need

Credential CEUs per 2-year cycle Ethics Supervision
BCBA 32 4 3, if you supervised during the cycle
BCaBA 20 4 3, if you supervise RBTs

Ethics and supervision CEUs count toward the total; they are not added on top1. Supervision CEUs apply to any BCBA who, at any point in the cycle, supervised an RBT, a BCaBA or a trainee1. For BCaBAs, they apply when supervising RBTs2.

Step 2 of 8

What counts as a CEU

The BACB recognizes three activity types, with no limit per type as long as activities are not repeated1:

Type What it is Value
Learning Events from ACE providers, graduate behavior-analytic courses passed with a C or higher, and certain BACB activities 0.5 CEU per 25 minutes
Teaching Instructing a learning event or a university course 0.5 CEU per 25 minutes
Scholarship Publishing a peer-reviewed article, or reviewing one for a journal 8 CEUs per publication; 1 per review

Repeating an activity does not earn new CEUs, and extra CEUs do not carry over to the next cycle1.

Step 3 of 8

What counts as ethics

Since March 2025, an ethics CEU is an event about the BACB’s ethics requirements or about cultural and contextual responsiveness. Most of the event must focus on that topic: a passing mention does not count14.

The diversity, equity and inclusion category the BACB had announced was dropped before it took effect5.

Step 4 of 8

How to check an ACE provider

The BACB authorizes ACE providers, but it does not review or approve each event they offer6. Before you enroll, look the provider up in the BACB’s ACE Provider Verification Registry, which lists only active providers6.

The event certificate must state how many CEUs it awards and how many are ethics or supervision CEUs. You are the one who uploads it to your BACB account6.

Step 5 of 8

How and when to report

The recertification application opens 45 days before your recertification date, and you can only submit it once you have entered enough CEUs, all earned within the cycle1. Each entry states how many CEUs are general, ethics and supervision1.

Before you submit, check:

Step 6 of 8

What it costs and what happens if you are late

Item BCBA BCaBA
Recertification $215 ($290 for BCBA-D) $140
Late fee $50 $50

If your date passes, your certification becomes inactive: you cannot bill, practice or supervise. You have 30 days to reinstate it with the late fee; after that it expires, and you would have to apply again under the requirements in place at that time1.

If the BACB audits your CEUs and the documentation is missing, incorrect or duplicated, the certification also expires1.

Step 7 of 8

What changes in 2027

Starting January 1, 2027, the BACB requires BCBAs who supervise to complete 4 supervision CEUs instead of 34. The document does not say how this applies to cycles already in progress on that date, so confirm with the BACB before you plan your CEUs. Nothing changes for BCaBAs: 20 CEUs, with 4 in ethics and 3 in supervision5.

The 8-hour supervision training is still required before you start supervising1. And the «6th edition» going around is not a new Ethics Code: it is the BCBA exam’s Test Content Outline (6th ed.), in effect since January 1, 2025. The Ethics Code is still the 2022 one17.

Step 8 of 8

If you are an RBT

If your renewal falls in 2026, you still renew as in past years, with the competency assessment. That renewal starts your first 2-year cycle, with 12 hours of professional development (PDUs) and a $50 fee3. Ongoing supervision does not count as professional development3.

Minimum supervision is still 5% of your service hours each month, with at least 2 real-time contacts, 1 observation and 1 individual contact; groups are 2 to 10 RBTs3.

Frequently asked questions

How many CEUs does a BCBA need in 2026?

32 in each 2-year cycle, including 4 in ethics and 3 in supervision if you supervised an RBT, a BCaBA or a trainee during the cycle. Ethics and supervision CEUs count toward the 32.

Do courses from non-ACE providers count?

The BACB handbook recognizes as learning CEUs the events of ACE providers, graduate behavior-analytic courses and certain BACB activities. Courses outside those routes are not among the options, so check the provider before you enroll.

Is there a new Ethics Code in 2026?

No. The current code took effect on January 1, 2022. The «6th edition» people talk about is the BCBA exam's Test Content Outline.

What happens if I miss my recertification date?

Your certification becomes inactive and you cannot bill, practice or supervise. You have 30 days to reinstate it with a $50 late fee; after that it expires and you would have to apply again.
